Stuart Rendleman, business manager for Ironworkers Local 782, calls the work of his union members “the backbone” of construction projects throughout the region. The Local 782 works on everything from bridges to power plants and buildings, which means there is a wide variety of opportunities for careers.

YOUR GATEWAY TO SUCCESS

ABOUT THE IRONWORKERS LOCAL 782

Rendleman says the union – officially known as the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers – has the potential for individuals to work on some of the most talked about construction projects in the area. And, he says, it all begins as an ironworker apprentice, a four-year program to a career in construction.
The Goal of Local 782 is to see every job completed safe, on time, and under budget.

HOW TO APPLY

APPLICATION PROCESS

How to Become a Member of the
Ironworkers Union Local 782

Applications for the apprenticeship program are available in February each year and they are due by the end of the month. Applications must be picked up at the Local 782 office at 2424 Cairo Road in Paducah, Kentucky. Applications are not available online.

To start with the ironworkers, Rendleman explained, applicants need to have a high school diploma or GED and pass a physical. Once the application is complete and returned to the office, he said applicants are scheduled for an interview. Applicants are selected for the program based on points earned from entries on the application and in the interview. He says applicants with welding experience and safety training get extra points, but those skillsets are not necessary to be accepted in the program – they are things that can be gained through the apprenticeship. In fact, he says, in recent years, nearly everyone who has completed the application process has been selected.
AGE & EDUCATION
You must be at least 18 years old and hold a High School Diploma or GED.
EXTRA POINTS
Welding and safety training experience not required, but valuable.
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
Possess a valid Illinois driver's license and be eligible to work in the U.S.
HEALTH & FITNESS
Be physically capable of performing manual trade work and pass a physical.
“We took almost 30 last year. We’re working hard to fill our job postings,” he says.

The first year of the four-year apprenticeship program is a mix of coursework and supervised experience at the local’s training facility in Paducah and on-the-job work.

“The first year, it’s two nights each week at our training center,” he adds. “The second, third and fourth years are what we call block training – apprentices come in four weeks each year (two in the fall and two in the spring).”

One of the advantages Rendleman explains of the ironworkers apprenticeship is that participants start out at 70% of full union salary and immediately have the entire range of benefits. “That’s a really selling point for us; we’re higher than most of the other trades,” he says.

Those benefits, besides outstanding hourly wages, include insurance, pension plans and more. He says there is an ongoing demand for ironworkers for a variety of projects.
