Discover a Rewarding Career in Finishing Concrete with the Local 143

The OPCMIA represents skilled artisans in the fields of plastering and cement masonry. This work involves the installation and finishing of plaster and concrete, materials known for their durability and beauty. The craftsmanship required in these trades is both challenging and rewarding, offering a sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to contribute to lasting structures. Being part of this union means joining a tradition of excellence in these ageless skills, with the potential for professional growth and job satisfaction in creating enduring works.

There’s something special about a career where you can see the results of your efforts not just immediately, but for years – and decades – to come.

That’s the beauty of working as a concrete finisher on highway, bridge and other building projects constructed by companies such as E.T. Simonds. The individuals who do this type of work are members of the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association Local No. 143. Kevin Crain, a business agent for the union local, says getting started as a concrete finisher is a rather simple process.

HOW TO APPLY

APPLICATION PROCESS

How to Become a Member of the Local 143

Crain says in order to do concrete work for companies like E.T. Simonds, employees must be a member of the union and go through specialized training either in Local 143’s three-year-long apprenticeship or by enrolling in a highway construction program at one of the area community colleges.

Access to the apprenticeship opportunity comes through an application with the union, he says. While there is no online application available, Crain says interested men and women should call Local 143’s office at (217) 356-9313 to begin the process.

Applicants will need to turn in high school transcripts or proof of a GED along with a written (paper) application and likely will meet with a union representative before being accepted into the union as an apprentice.
AGE & EDUCATION
Must be 18 years old with a High School Diploma or GED.
TRAINING
Must complete the 3 year apprenticeship program.
SKILLS
Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade.
APPLYING
The application process is open year-round.
A physical is not required, but Crain points out, “you have to be physically fit. It’s construction; it’s hands-on work.”

Once in the program, applicants will be involved in a mix of on-the-job training and classroom and training center work at a union facility such as a newly-opened center in West Frankfort. Most of the in-house training takes place in the cooler months; summers are prime-time for on-site training with employers – paid learning and experience.

Crain explains that the apprenticeship program leads to high-paying, quality jobs.

“We’re talking about $55 or $56 an hour, total package,” he says. “It’s benefits including health insurance, retirement pension and more.”

“it’s a very good, enjoyable craft,” he says. “I like that I can drive around the region and show you things I’ve done – work I’ve been a part of. We don’t go to a factory everyday, it’s always something different, somewhere different.”
