The OPCMIA represents skilled artisans in the fields of plastering and cement masonry. That’s the beauty of working as a concrete finisher on highway, bridge and other building projects constructed by companies such as E.T. Simonds. The individuals who do this type of work are members of the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association Local No. 143. Kevin Crain, a business agent for the union local, says getting started as a concrete finisher is a rather simple process.

A physical is not required, but Crain points out, “you have to be physically fit. It’s construction; it’s hands-on work.”

Once in the program, applicants will be involved in a mix of on-the-job training and classroom and training center work at a union facility such as a newly-opened center in West Frankfort. Most of the in-house training takes place in the cooler months; summers are prime-time for on-site training with employers – paid learning and experience.

Crain explains that the apprenticeship program leads to high-paying, quality jobs.

“We’re talking about $55 or $56 an hour, total package,” he says. “It’s benefits including health insurance, retirement pension and more.”

“it’s a very good, enjoyable craft,” he says. “I like that I can drive around the region and show you things I’ve done – work I’ve been a part of. We don’t go to a factory everyday, it’s always something different, somewhere different.”
